AMD Takes On Intel's Ultrabooks With Ultra-Thin Laptop Hardware

AMD isn't just going to lie back and hand domination of the market for super-slim, ultra-portable laptops to Intel. Its riposte to the challenge posed by it's rivals ultrabooks is a new range of processors designed for ultra-thin laptops.
According to AMD, the term 'ultra-thin' only describes the physical dimensions of the new laptops the processors are designed for, rather than a whole segment of the market; Intel rigorously defines its 'ultrabooks' as not just measuring under 2 cm, but also demanding minimum requirements for power and great battery life.
AMD won't restrict its processors to any particular products, which it's likely to fit with APU Fusion hardware, which combines the processor and graphics chipset on the same chip. Everything else will be up to manufacturers, who will be free to do whatever they like ...
Without more information, it's hard to know what AMD's arrival on the market will herald. For the time being, Intel provides hardware both for the MacBook Air and Apple's competitors, like the Acer S3 or the Asus UX31E (above). We'll have to wait until next January's CES—which we'll be covering in full—to see who will the first to make an ultra-thin laptop with AMD's new hardware ...
