The Guardian is reporting that Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch have apparently joined forces to create a digital newspaper designed exclusively for touchscreen tablets.

The Daily is expected to be officially announced at the end of the month with launch following in early 2011. You may remember that when Apple's iPad was released, media magnate Rupert Murdoch showed a keen interest in the device, billing it as the prefect product for bringing print media into the digital era. Above all, it was a perfect outlet for paid digital content.

The end of the PDF paper?

On top of this, Apple CEO Steve Jobs hasn't seemed entirely satisfied with the selection of tablet-based titles on offer. These often lack creativity, and it's true that their current formats don't always get the best out of the tablet's multimedia capabilities. Then again, developing an original, multimedia version of any publication takes time and money.

With The Daily—a publication that'll be available exclusively on touchscreen tablets—Murdoch and Jobs will hope to set a new standard for tablet-based publications. The Daily will be sold for $0.99 per week or $4.25 per month, and will be written by a team of one hundred specially hired journalists at Murdoch's News Corp headquarters in New York.
