While visiting Panasonic in Japan, we thought we'd ask the firm's engineers whether they thought PVA or IPS panels offered the best contrast ratios?

Bearing in mind that Panasonic is working on a new generation of IPS panels, we wanted to know why, even if improvements are on the cards, the firm doesn't place more importance on improving the level of black in IPS panels, and in turn their contrast ratios.

The engineers said that 'you say that because, when facing the screen, it's true that TVs with PVA panels produce a more contrasted image. But our feeling is that already, globally speaking, if you also take into account the contrast perceived from the sides [Ed. due to wider viewing angles in IPS screens], then IPS panels have a better overall contrast than PVA panels!'
