Altec Lansing MIX
Back in the day, some newfangled thing called hip-hop found its way from the Bronx to Brixton to Berwick-upon-Tweed and brought with it the mighty ghetto blaster. These giant radio/cassette players were heavy on bass and were designed to be carried around on your shoulder. Now it seems they're set to be revived in a 21st century remix.

Launched a few months ago, the Altec Lansing MIX is a ghetto blaster throwback with an iPod dock replacing the now-redundant cassette player. There are certainly more discreet models out there, but we couldn't resist putting this boombox to the test.

Harman/Kardon has chosen a sleeker, more industrial-style design for its Go+Play dock, which, in spite of its resemblance to Johnny Five, isn't as blatantly retro as the Altec Lansing boombox. Stylish it may be, but what else has this high-end portable speaker system got to offer?

In keeping with today's retro theme, both of these products also made us rediscover a old-school power source we thought no longer even existed: the LR20 battery!
