Apple has finally released the new version of its mobile OS on iTunes.  The biggest news is that iOS 4.2 supports the iPad, giving the tablet multitasking for the first time.

Four months after it arrived on the iPhone 4, the iPad too will be able to run several apps at once, a failing that was heavily criticised by many when it launched.  With today's release of iOS 4.2, Apple's tablet catches up with all of those Android devices which already offered multitasking, and also gets features like a unified inbox for all e-mail accounts and the ability to organise apps in folders.

Another new feature is the availability of TV series to rent in iTunes.  As is often the case with, that's only available to customers with a US-based iTunes Store account for the time being.

It's the first time that everybody gets the chance to use the 'Find My iPhone, iPad or iPad touch' feature, which was previously reserved for those who paid £59 for a year-long membersip of MobileMe.

As for other devices, the update is available for the iPhone 4, 3G S and 3G, as well as the iPod touch 2G and 3G.
