The capacity of the good old internal hard drive just keeps on growing. Hitachi has taken things to a new level with the freshly presented 4 TB Deskstar 5K4000.

Hitachi has announced the upcoming launch of the 5K4000 internal hard drive with storage capacities of up to 4 TB, 32 MB of cache and an SATA-3 (6 Gbps) interface. Plus, like other Coolspin drives, the four 1 TB disk plates spin at 5900 RPM.

Hitachi is announcing data transfer speeds of up to 160 MBps for this model, compared with 170 MBps for the previous version—the five-star 5K3000 we reviewed earlier this year.

This new monster hard drive is due to launch imminently in the US for a recommended retail price of $400 (£260), although stock is apparently limited.

Alongside the Deskstar 5K4000 Hitachi also presented the Touro 4 TB external hard drive, coming in 2012 for $420 (£270).
