CPU manufacturer Intel was this fined a record 1.06 billion euros (approximately £948m) for anti-compeitive practices within the EU.  The fine represents the closing of a chapter in an affair that has dragged on for more than eight years.

The European Commission found that Intel acted illegally by offering hidden incentives to both manufacturers and retailers in exchange for exclusivity, pushing out their competitors, notably AMD.

It isn't the first time that the European Commission has handed down large fines for abusing a dominant market position; Microsoft was infamously fined 497 million euros back in 2004.
