The Full HD TVs currently on the market are said to be '2K' TVs as they are 1920 pixels wide, which is around 2,000 dots (2,000 = 2K). Sometime in the near future, we're expecting to see 4K TVs (3840 x 2160 pixels) come to market and, after that, 8K TVs (7680 x 4320 pixels).

Sharp's 8K TV tech specs, as quoted by HD Land Blog:
85''
7680 x 4320 pixels
300 cd/m2, 10 bits

Sharp is set to present an 8K TV at this year's IFA tech show. With its monster definition, this TV is said to be 'Super Hi-Vision' as Sharp's super-sharp screen will render more fine detail in films, for example, so long as they're recorded in the right resolution. However, this boosted resolution is most eagerly awaited for the switch to glasses-free 3D.

Back in March, we asked Panasonic's engineers about these new resolutions when we went to visit the firm in Japan. They told us that they considered 4K resolution to be 'just one phase', clearly referring to the 8K TVs that will eventually follow. You'll have to be pretty patient though, as although prototypes like this are already being presented in 2011, it seems that 8K TVs may not hit the high street until sometime after 2020.
