After losing the limelight to a host of other new television technologies, OLED screens are once again gaining attention thanks to a 31'' demo from LG.

Sony, Samsung and LG have all been developing OLED screens, an embryonic technology which is eventually set to replace both LCD and plasma displays.  Sony managed to keep the crowds at bay with the XEL-1 and a prototype with rather limited appeal (£4000 for an 11'' display ...), while Samsung has long since given up on showing off its 32'' prototype.  LG is back, though, with a finished 31'' OLED display.

The television, which doesn't even have a name yet, is set to go on sale in Korea in October and should arrive in Europe by the first half of next year.  Innovative new features include support for active 3D, and thanks to the excellent performance of OLED displays-deep, dark blacks, virtually no response time, huge viewing angles and a riot of colours-the results are almost as good as, if not equivalent to, what Panasonic has achieved with plasmas.

At this size (78 cm from one corner to the other), the physical dimensions of the panel are as stunning as what you can see on it: OLED technology allows it to be just 3 mm from front to back.

And if you're impatient, LG has confirmed that its 15'' OLED TV will be available in Europe this September, so you might be able to see one this weekend if your local store is lucky enough to stock it.

The 15EL900 is on sale now for £1502, which leaves us wondering just how much the 31'' version will cost.  LG is yet to announce pricing ...
