Intel gave a brief demonstration of its new processor at the IDF 2011 in San Francisco. The super-small processor, which goes by the codename Haswell, is designed to equip ultra-portable devices. The Haswell microprocessor is already operational, it seems, but final versions aren't due to launch until 2013.

Although the processor was demonstrated using a desktop computer, Intel was keen to point out that its Haswell processors are primarily intended to bring real technological advances to the firm's Ultrabook mini laptops. The new architecture makes Haswell processors more energy efficient than most CPUs, which is always good news. However, this also means that they won't get as hot as regular processors, so the size of the computer chassis can be reduced considerably.

Apart form that, Intel wouldn't give us any more technical information about its upcoming processors. We'll keep our ears to the ground though, and we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we find out more.
