Coming 12 October, Apple's iCloud cloud-based storage facility offering up to 5 GB of free storage will allow users to access content such as documents, photos and music wherever they go.
This finally cuts the obligatory link between Apple mobile devices and a computer, notably for access to iTunes. In other words, you'll now be able to back up or store data, contacts, apps etc. from an iPhone or iPad without using iTunes—which is good news. Plus, you'll be able to access your content on all your devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac etc.) with no synchronisation required.
There'll even be a Find My Friends feature to help users locate friends who choose to share their locations.
Apple's iCloud will be up and running as from 12 October. This service will then be followed by iTunes Match, due to launch in the US first of all. This subscription-based service ($25 per year) will allow users to sync a whole content library (even with illegal files) and then play all files back via streaming.
Thanks to Engadget for its Live coverage of the event, which allowed people all over the world (including us) to follow the Apple press conference as it happened.
