In spite of halting the sale and development of webOS devices and though not giving any details in its road map, HP has reaffirmed its ambitions to take Open webOS further than Android and iOS.

In an interview with CRN.com, HP CEO Meg Whitman, affirmed: "We're going to build another operating system that has huge advantages, in my view, over iOS, which is a closed system, [and] Android, which is incredibly fragmented and may ultimately be more closed with [Google's] acquisition of Motorola Mobility". So effective, according to Whitman, will Open webOS be that apparently within two to three years there will be no doubting its legitimacy.

The comment comes after the recent departure of senior members of the webOS division. Bought from Palm for USD 1.2 billion in April 2010, the platform has still failed to earn a penny for HP. Quite the opposite in fact, with the last webOS product to date, the TouchPad, losing the company quite a bit of money.

To recap, HP is making its platform open source, with the first version slated for September, if all goes well...
