HP Registers 'PalmPad' Trademark

According to certain sources, HP has registered 'PalmPad' as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Could this be a sign that the IT giant, which recently acquired Palm and its WebOS, has a new range of products in the pipeline?

The name 'PalmPad' certainly has a nice ring to it, but what could it be? Since acquiring Palm earlier this year, speculation has been mounting about HP's future developments in the field of mobile devices, and this new trademark certainly adds fuel to the fire.

Evidently, the acquisition of Palm's WebOS, a mobile operating system already featured in the Pré and Pré Plus smartphones, could well open the door to the lucrative but still emerging touchscreen tablet market for Hewlett Packard.

Return on investment

As word has suddenly gone quiet on HP's Hurricane Android tablet project, the American IT firm could well have ditched Android in favour of using WebOS to develop a new touchscreen tablet—the PalmPad, perhaps?

We'll probably find out what HP's got up its sleeve by the end of the year or in early 2011, a period during which several tablets are likely to be released ... including the HP Slate on Windows 7? Probably not, it seems.
