Although it uses IPS displays in its monitors, it seems that HP doesn't want to put all of its eggs in one basket and has announced plans for a 22'' monitor with an MVA display.

In the rather small world of computer monitors, 2011 has already seen a lot of developments in several different directions.  After years of stability, the big manufacturers finally seem to be willing to offer ordinary consumers something other than TN technology.

After a whole range of IPS monitors-including the Asus PA246Q, the Dell U2311H and U2211H, the LG IPS226V and IPS231P and the HP ZR24w-HP has also launched the L2201x with an MVA display.

As well as having the extra-wide viewing angles that MVA technology provides, the new monitor also has an ultra-thin frame and a photo-frame style stand.

We still don't have all of the technical details, but we do know that HP is claiming a contrast ratio of in excess of 5000:1.

The visuals that are available online suggest that the only video input it has is a single DisplayPort input.  The power brick also seems to be part of a separate unit.  We'll keep you up to date as soon as we find our a little bit more about the new monitor.

That shouldn't take too long, as it's set to go on sale in the US next month at a launch price of around $249.  That will work out at around £150 if it makes it to Europe ...
