A new discovery: Move the microphone closer!

Sony Ericsson has found the solution to all your problems!

When the person you're talking to can't hear you, just move the microphone closer! I'm not making this up. It's right there on the SE site: 'On a crowded train or a busy bus? Just move the microphone closer to your mouth.'

Wouldn't it have been better to build in a better-performing microphone if they want to boast about the sound quality?

The VH300 is an amazing headset that will make you look like a secret agent… maybe.

Design: Yes, but ...

The VH300 consists of two parts: an earpiece and a clip-on microphone, connected by a cable. The basic idea is to avoid the usual highly visible headset by using something that looks like an MP3-player earpiece. The idea isn’t bad, but we’d have preferred an in-ear earpiece , or at least something better than just an earbud with a foam cover.

The microphone clips on anywhere on your person, like a standard hands-free kit, and it's very convenient.

The battery life is a big plus: 10 hours in use is very good.

Audio Quality: ouch!

As you might expect, the earbud-type earpiece leaves something to be desired. You can have a conversation, but in noisy locations the insulation and sound conduction to the ear aren't as good as with a standard earpiece with a silicone plug.

As for the microphone, we'd have really appreciated decent anti-noise processing, but none is in evidence. But don't worry! Sony Ericsson has thought of everything and they've come up with an unbeatable solution! (see inset)

In short, the VH300 is based on a good concept, but in reality it's far from being workable. The battery life is excellent, but the sound isn't really good, making this headset difficult to recommend.

The VH300 is based on an interesting concept, but it's not very practical to use. The battery life is its only real strength.
