There are two types of wireless handsfree kits available for mobile phones: in-ear headphones and traditional headsets.  The former, made of rubber, foam or silicon, slide into your ear.  The idea is to create a seal with the outside of your ear to block sound coming from outside.  That makes them particularly well-suited to noisy environments like public transport.  In theory, they're the best way to be able to hear your calls while you're on the go, but not everybody likes the idea of pushing the earplug right into their ear canal.

The alternative is more traditional headsets.  The sound quality is similar, but they can't isolate you from external noise as well. They need to be loud enough and clear for you to be able to listen to them in all conditions.

A good quality headet: good quality sound, comfortable fittings and good battery life ...

The main factor affecting your choice of headset should be the audio quality, of course, but it's not the only thing to bear in mind.  You should also look at what accessories are on offer.  Some manufacturers don't throw anything in for free, but others include extra chargers, neck straps or different sizes of ear-plugs for in-ear versions.  The general look and feel of the product, as well as how comfortable it is to wear are also important elements.

But what hardware do you need to use one of these headsets?  It's not rocket science: all you need is a Bluetooth phone!  For these tests, we tried them out using a Blackberry Bold, a HTC Touch Diamond and a selection of the other mobiles we've tested in our lab.
