Gradients Don't Work in 3D: Are We The Only Ones?

Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I haven't been able to find out anything about this problem.  Let me explain: it happens every time I go to the cinema to watch a 3D film.

Recently, my friends and I have noticed very pronounced posterisation effects in dark areas of the screen in films like Shrek 4 or Toy Story 3 to name just two.  To put it another way, gradients from one colour to the next aren't smooth and continuous, but composed of individual blocks.  And we could spot it from the very first frames—even in the DreamWorks logo for instance.  So, instead of seeing this:


We saw:



It looks dreadful, but the problem is solved immediately by removing our 3D glasses.
