All it takes is a GPS-enabled smartphone and a navigation application to turn your phone into a veritable pocket satnav. Sounds easy doesn't it? But with so many different apps out there, choosing the right one can seem like a minefield. That's why we'll be putting them through their paces to help you pick the best apps around!

We're kicking things off with a couple of iPhone applications, but we'll be testing Android apps soon too.

German manufacturer Navigon was the first big-name manufacturer to release a fully functional GPS app for the iPhone. Ever since its launch, MobileNavigator has continued to develop and evolve, gaining more new and useful functions along the way.

As a leading manufacturer of stand-alone stanavs, the Dutch firm TomTom couldn't really ignore the growing success of the iPhone. The TomTom iPhone app hit the App Store last summer, with regular updates and the optional TomTom Car Kit following suit. The app's functions are now very close to those found in the brand's higher-end satnav units.
