Gmail: Several Thousand Accounts Emptied

There was bad news for certain Gmail account holders yesterday when some 150,000 accounts were wiped of all their contents.

The search engine giant acknowledges that some kind of bug caused tens of thousands of Gmail accounts to be emptied of all their contents. Apparently it's not possible for affected account holders to retrieve any of the lost data (address book, e-mails, contacts etc.).

Google says it's doing all it can to restore as many of the damaged accounts as possible which, according to the firm, represents 0.08% of total Gmail accounts. During this maintenance operation some users could have trouble signing in to their accounts.

Maybe it's time Google brought some kind of 'Save' or 'Archive' function to Gmail?
