Saitek Smart Technology

Like Logitech's 'gaming software', Saitek has a tool for configuring your controller.

It's not just a matter of assigning one feature to a certain button like you can in the game itself, but rather recording a whole series of actions. Unfortunately, though, the system is so complicated that it can be off-putting when you use it for the first time.

The PS2700 Rumble Pad is one of Saitek's high-end controllers, and it's no surprise to find the essentials, including four buttons, four triggers (two of which are analogue), two joysticks and a directional pad, but also some little extras like the Cyborg module.  It's compatible with both PCs and the PlayStation 2 and 3.

While the Cyborg Rumble Pad had a look that was inspired by the design of the original Xbox 360 controller, the PS2700 is more visually similar to the PS3.  It's easy to handle and all of the controls are within reach.  It's well-built, solid, and there's no give between the controls and the frame.

With the PS2700, it doesn't matter whether you prefer the joysticks in the same place as on the Xbox 360 controller or the PS3's: you can use the Cyborg system to swap their location with the directional pad.  Press the button on the back and the module pops out and can be rotated through 180° before you replace it.

Excellent gameplay

Like the Cyborg Rumble Pad, the controller behaves impeccably during gameplay.  The joysticks are responsive and very accurate, something which can be improved on even further by holding down the Precision Aim button at the back, which reduces the sensitivity of the right joystick.  It's very useful, especially in FPS games where you need to get an accurate sight on a faraway target.

This controller is an excellent all-rounder that's well worth its five-star rating. If you like your joysticks the way they are on the PS3, we suggest you look at the PS1000, which doesn't have the flexibility of the Cyborg module but is almost half the price.
