Up until now, Garmin was the only manufacturer offering a GPS for bicycles. It has now been joined by Mio.

The range, not yet on sale, is for now made up of two models: the Mio Cyclo 300 and the 305. These two models will be sold with preloaded maps and are waterproof to resist rain and snow. The software is bike orientated with special POIs and a "Surprise me" feature to help you discover your surroundings. The Cyclo 305 comes with a sensor placed on the wheel and a heart monitor to give you more information on your performance.

While Garmin obviously has experience in the sporting field, Mio is simply hoping to build on its experience with car GPS equipment. It looks as if Mio might be trying to surf the current wave of electric bikes and the fall in usage of cars in big cities.

Another GPS manufacturer (none other than TomTom) has also given cycling some thought. The TomTom solution simply includes a bike option in the menus for one of its car GPS models. This is a welcome addition, especially for a Dutch manufacturer based in the country where the bicycle is king!
