Focal Stella Utopia EM Speakers: carry on dreaming ...

For a while now, 2.1 speaker systems and 5.1 home cinema sets have been gaining popularity, making 2.0 speakers harder to find. However, 2.0 speakers are still hanging on in the world of home audio systems.

In fact, given the slightly shocking price of these new Stella Utopia EM speakers from Focal, it's clear that this is a specialist market!

The Stella Utopia is basically a smaller version of Focal's third-generation Grande Utopia EM, a speaker that's quite simply the crème de la crème in the world of home hi-fi systems. Each Grande Utopia weighs 260 kg, is over 2m tall and has a power handling capacity of 1.5 kW: that's the kind of spec you won't see every day!

The Stella Utopia, however, is designed to bring high-end hi-fi dreamers a little closer to Earth, weighing 'just' 165 kg and standing 1.55m tall for 1,000 W of power. It also has one less channel (three) and one less speaker (four).

If you're interested in buying these new speakers you'd better start saving now. The Stella Utopia will be available for around £30,000 per speaker (TBC)—yes that's right, I did say per speaker, the pair will set you back something in the region of £60,000. It may look pricey, but it's a bargain compared with the Grande Utopia speakers at £110,000 a pair.
