Although 3D gaming has been possible on PCs for over a year, there's still no sign of 3D games for any of the big consoles ... until now, that is!
It looks like the wait could soon be over, as Sony has announced the launch of its first 3D games for the Playstation 3 in Japan on 10 June. For the moment, only three 3D games will be released: WipEout HD, Super Stardust HD and Mr Pain. Playing either of the first two requires a simple update via the Playstation Network, whereas gamers will need to pay an extra 300 yen (£2.20) for access to Mr Pain's 3D mode. There's also word of a new PS3 firmware coming before the end of the year, which should bring compatibility with 3D Blu-ray discs.
Sony hasn't given any release dates for Europe, but hopefully we won't have to wait too long!
A double whammy for Sony?
Sony could stand to gain a lot from the onset of 3D. As no forthcoming 3D compatibility has been announced for the Xbox, the Playstation 3 could finally get the edge over its main rival. Plus, the increased availability of 3D content should also help boost sales of 3D TVs, like Sony's LX900, which are a must-have for 3D gaming or watching 3D films on the PS3.
