Western Digital is the first manufacturer to sell a 2.5-inch external hard drive with a 2 TB storage capacity. Note, however, that this My Passport external HDD is also available in 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB versions.

The drive has a tough casing that's resistant to scratches and which doesn't pick up fingerprints. It comes in a choice of black, white, red, blue and grey, although not all storage capacities are available in all colours. In fact, only the black version is available from 500 GB through to 2 TB, while the red, blue and grey models are available from 500 GB to 1 TB and the white drive is only sold with 1 TB of memory.

All drives in the range come with the Super Speed USB 3.0 interface (backwards-compatible with USB 2.0) for data transfer speeds that promise to be three times higher than with standard USB 2.0 HDDs. Let's put that to the test.

And it's true that this external hard drive has excellent data transfer speeds. In fact, they're more than three times higher than those typically seen over a USB 2.0 interface. This latest Western Digital hard drive manages a read speed of 122 MBps compared with around 35 MBps for USB 2.0 models. This makes the new My Passport the fastest external hard drive we've seen yet.

Write speeds come in at 110 MBps. There are faster drives out there—but only by a whisker! The LaCie Rugged Mini has one of the fastest write speeds around at 114 MBps, which isn't that far ahead of this Western Digital drive.

Portability

The My Passport 2 TB isn't the slimmest external hard drive on the market. It measures 111 x 21 x 86 mm—which makes approximately 200 cm3 when the most compact hard drives are nearer 124 cm3 (like the LaCie Rugged Mini without its shock-proof case). However, it can still be easily slipped into a trouser pocket—its rounded corners help.
5/5 Western Digital My Passport USB 3.0 2 TB DigitalVersus 2012-04-25 15:02:00

Pros

  • Excellent data transfer speeds: 122 MBps read speed, 110 MBps write speed
  • USB 3.0 interface
  • Powered by USB connection
  • Good software suite supplied
  • Scratch-proof, fingerprint-resistant casing

Cons

  • Bulkier than average

Conclusion

The Western Digital My Passport 2 TB external hard drive is a fantastic product. It has a huge storage capacity and super-fast data transfer speeds, not to mention a high-resistance casing that doesn't pick up fingerprints or scratches. It's only minor drawback is a slightly bulkier-than-average design for a 2.5-inch portable external hard drive.
