The Stor.e Basics range is Toshiba's entry-level line of external hard drives. That said, you still get a speedy USB 3.0 connection instead of being fobbed off with bog-standard USB 2.0. We tested the 1 TB version of the Stor.e Basics, which is compact, self-powered via the USB connection, and looks like a good-value HDD.
The Stor.e Basics hard drive is available in four storage sizes: 500 GB, 750 GB, 1 TB and 1.5 TB. The 500 GB and 750 GB models are also physically smaller in size.
The drive casing is finished in hard plastic which is simple and plain. It seems less sturdy than a metal casing. Otherwise, product assembly is good.

The data transfer speeds are far from the best we've ever seen. We measured the read speed at 93 MBps and the write speed at 90 MBps. The Stor.e Basics is therefore nowhere near the LaCie Rikiki 1TB on pure performance but, at the end of the day, it still does OK.
This external hard drive is nice and compact, measuring 7.9 x 1.65 x 11.9 cm (155 cm3) and weighing 180 g. There are smaller external hard drives out there, but the Stor.e Basics is still perfectly portable.
