Software
Seagate supplies a software package with the GoFlex Desk for synchronising folders and protecting data.
It's a nice extra, but it's not very well designed. Beginners may find it tricky to find their way around.

The Seagate GoFlex Desk is a 3.5-inch external hard drive. Like the GoFlex Pro, it stands out from the crowd thanks to a system of interchangeable bases that bring compatibility with various interfaces. Out of the box, the drive comes with a USB 3.0 adapter, but bases can be bought separately for FireWire 800 or eSATA.
We tested the 3 TB version of this HDD, but 2 TB and 4 TB models are also available.
The USB 3.0 interface hooks up to a computer using the 120 cm cable supplied, which is long enough for most set-ups.
The power transformer isn't built into the product, however, so don't forget to bring it along if you take the drive out and about.
Performances
Over the USB 3.0 connection, data transfer speeds are quite simply excellent, with write speeds reaching 134 MBps and read speeds reaching 143 MBps. This makes the GoFlex Desk one of the fastest external hard drives we've tested yet, ahead of the Western Digital My Book 1 TB.
Portability
Obviously, a 3.5-inch hard drive isn't going to be as easily transportable as a 2.5-inch model. With a total volume of 922 cm3 and weighing 960 g, this drive only scrapes one star in this category. It's the kind of drive you could move around if you really needed to, but it's not really compact enough for mobile data storage.

The Seagate GoFlex Desk offers excellent data transfer speeds, partly thanks to the USB 3.0 interface. Over USB 3.0, it's one of the fastest external hard drives we've seen yet!
