No Software

Unlike many of its competitors, this external hard drive doesn't come with any back-up or encryption software. Those tools can be very useful when you want to keep your files in sync or protect them.

With the new Kiosk LS Mini hard drive, you can store, back up and share all sorts of data over a self-powered USB 2.0 port, whether you're working with videos, music, photos or documents.  Hot plug technology means it's recognised immediately by all computers without the need to install new software.

In short: it does everything any other external hard drive can do.  So let's see how fast it can do it ...

As we expected for USB 2.0

The transfer speeds didn't blow us away.  The Kiosk LS Mini Series 1 TB drive peaked at 32.4 MB/s for reading data and 28.9 MB/s for writing.  That might be pretty good for a USB 2.0 device, but looks weak compared to what USB 3.0 can achieve.  For example, another 1 TB device, the Transcend StoreJet 25A3, puts in a much more impressive performance with read speeds of 110 MB/s and write speeds of 103 MB/s.  The to devices are worlds apart.

Portability

To keep your files nice and safe, Memup has used an external finish it calls ABS Glossy.  We couldn't actually take it apart, so we can't tell whether there is any kind of protection inside.  What we can say is that it seems pretty bulky compared to similar external hard drives.  It measures 130 x 85 x 22 mm, or around 253 cm³; a more compact device would have a volume of around 200 cm³.

Acceptable speeds for a USB 2.0 device—but USB 3.0 is faster

No software

The disappointingly low limits of the USB 2.0 standard hold the Memup Kiosk LS Mini external hard drive back. Worse, it's pretty bulky for a 2.5'' device. That makes it slightly tougher, but that's not enough to make up for the other problems.
