PCClone EX Lite

The XD5 comes with PCCloneEX Lite software, and as the name suggests, it's a backup tool. You can choose which folders on your computer you want to synchronise with your external hard drive. Our only complaint is that the 'Lite' version doesn't allow you to programme backups in the future.

LG is updating its range of 2.5'' external hard drives with the XD5, which is a replacement for the XD2 500 GB that we recently tested.

One thing that hasn't changed is the price, with LG remaining very aggressive with a 500 GB hard drive available for under £60.

As you can see in the photos above, the XD5 comes in four different colours: all white, black and silver, black and red and blue and white.  All of the versions come in 320 GB and 500 GB.  LG has slimmed the drives down and the new XD5 is now smaller with glossy plastics to co-ordinate with today's laptops.

Speeds: not much change

Speeds over USB (MB/s)

The main changes to the XD5, though, have been on the outside.  Inside, we only managed to measure a very small speed increase.  When writing data, the XD5 reached an average of 24.1 MB/s compared to the XD2's 23.4 MB/s.  For reading data, things are a little better with an average speed of 32.5 MB/s.  That means copying 10 GB of files to this drive will take 6 minutes 55 seconds, and reading them to another device around 5 minutes.

The LG XD5 500 GB is a sleek, smart 2.5'' hard drive for a very reasonable price. It's about average in its class when it comes to speeds. There are, of course, faster drives, but they are more expensive.
