On the back of this external HDD, there's a USB 3.0 port (60 cm cable supplied) that's backwards-compatible with USB 2.0. Note, however, that the USB connection doesn't provide power for this 3.5" hard drive—a separate mains adapter is supplied (complete with external power transformer block).
The USB 3.0 connection makes for some excellent data transfer speeds. With read speeds reaching 144 MBps and write speeds at 136 MBps, the Sq is one of the fastest external hard drives we've tested yet, on par with the Seagate Go Flex Desk 3 TB. In real terms, that means it takes 40 seconds to copy a 4 GB file onto the drive and 35 second to copy it off again.
Generally speaking, 3.5" external hard drives can't beat 2.5" models on portability. The Freecom Hard Drive Sq is no exception, measuring 160 x 160 x 30 mm (768 cm3) and weighing just over 190 g.
