External Hard Drive Tests: from 32 GB to 640 GB, with eSATA and SSD

Our tests today feature three very different external hard drives. And when we say very different, we mean it. With sizes ranging from 32 GB (no, that isn't a typo!) up to 640 GB, connections over USB and eSATA and everything from an elegant finish to a tough rubber case, these three don't have very much in common.

The Buffalo Technology MicroStation might only have room for 32 GB of data, but it's an SSD drive, meaning flash memory replaces the usual disc platters.  In theory, that should mean it can move data around faster, as long as it isn't held back by the maximum speeds of its USB port.

The Samsung G2 is the biggest of the three in terms of storage capacity, reaching 640 GB.  It's a rather traditional offering, with just one USB connection, but you might be attracted to its shiny finish and the range of different colours on offer.

Finally, the LaCie Rugged eSATA 500 GB might not be the most reserved of hard drives, but its bright orange rubber exterior can protect it from falls from heights of up to two metres.  It also features an eSATA connection that's compatible with the recent Power eSATA standard.
