Owners of Canon SLRs will be pleased to hear that an Android app has now been developed for controlling their camera via a smartphone or touchscreen tablet.
As well as turning your phone into a remote control, the DSLR Controller app has a preview function and offers remote access to the camera's settings.
However, the app can only be used with Android devices that have USB Host compatibility. Currently, it has only been tried and tested with the Samsung Galaxy S II with 2.3.4 KG firmware and the Motorola Xoom, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Acer Iconia A500 and Toshiba Thrive tablets.
DSLR Controller can be used with the following Canon DSLRs:
The app lets you access and control all the settings you'd typically find in remote control software on a PC or Mac via your phone or tablet. You can therefore take pictures, adjust the exposure, white balance, autofocus and more.

For those of you using Apple tablets and smartphones, a similar app, called DSLR Camera Remote, is available for the iPhone and iPad. With this system, you have to hook your SLR up to a computer and then launch a special server. Then, you load up the app on your iPhone or iPad, which communicates with the computer (which in turn controls the camera) via Wi-Fi. That all seems a lot more complicated than with DSLR Controller!

Although this application is currently in its beta stage, it'll still cost you £5.23 to buy in Android Market. Like any beta program, the app does still have a few problems, and is still a bit too prone to crashing. Plus, developers are planning to add extra functions to the final version, such as video support, an intervalometer and direct image transfer. However, if you have compatible equipment, the app is still a good buy, as the more expensive final version will be free for users who've already bought the beta version.
