Audio and Video Playback: mere gimmicks

Today smartphones offer decent quality multimedia, which is not the case for photo frames yet. Audio and video quality is not convincing.
Beware of the all-in-one aspect of these products, which most of the time just increase their price. The Polaroïd's price is not any higher, it is actually rather surprisingly inexpensive such a big frame.
Polaroïd, the instant photography company has branched into photo frames. Their models, ranging from 3,5 to 12 inches, are well-priced.
This is a multimedia digital frame as it will play slideshows, MP3 and video. Could this be as good as it gets?
Design
No surprise here, it looks like any other photo frame and will fit in any surrounding. Because of tis size, this one is heavy and has a wide profile. Its glossy surface will collect fingerprints, but then again because it is bulky, it should not be going from hand to hand often.
The frame has a remote control (which looks nothing like the frame's design) that comes quite handy. To access the menus, there are buttons on the side. The tripod mount is rather tricky; patience and precision will be required to make it stand.
Display quality
There is little internal memory here so you will either have to use a memory card or a USB key to display MP3 et MP4 (video). Brightness and colours require adjusting. By default the photos (JPEG) are reddish and too bright. Sadly there is no real setting available, you can only activate the colour optimizing function.
A part from the vivid colours, which actually may please many, the pictures are crisp and neat. You can zoom on the picture during a slideshow with the remote in order to point out a detail.
The audio function is more a gimmick than anything else. The sound (do not try putting it up to the full) is dry and lacks depth. The video player can come in handy, but is of course not ideal.
Because the frame carries a TN display, you have to be sitting in front of the screen to see the photos well. The viewing angles go black when you looking from the side or from below (if it is hanging on the wall).
Pluses
-
correct display
-
user friendly
-
good price/size/quality
Minuses
-
not standalone
-
remote's design has nothing to do with the frame
-
not enough display options
Nice size, decent display quality and well-priced. Video and audio are however not very convincing.
