Alongside the expert-level Alpha 77, Sony also released an SLT aimed at consumer users. The Alpha 65 is therefore lined up to rival traditional best-sellers like the Canon EOS 600D and Nikon D5100.

The Sony Alpha 65 has a similar set of tech specs to the Alpha 77, using the same 24-Megapixel sensor and image processing system. In fact, the main differences are aesthetic, as the consumer model has a lighter body, no splash-proof finish and fewer physical controls. One very important difference, however, is that the Alpha 65 comes bundled with Sony's 18-55 mm SAM Kit lens.
