Samsung has updated its entry-level compact range with four ES- and S-series models, all of which are due to sell for under £200. This is a particularly popular market segment for camera makers, representing 75% of total sales.
Note first of all that Samsung has decided to tidy up its entry-level cameras to make things clearer for shoppers. From now on:
- ES models are low-cost snappers
- ST models are entry-level models with a slightly better build
- DV models have two screens
- MV models have swivel-screens
- WB models are high-end superzoom compacts.
Similarly, Samsung has redesigned its point-and-shoots, giving them a more distinctive design, as was the case a few years ago with the now-defunct NV range.

Samsung ST88
Next, the ST66 has a more classic design and comes with a 16-Megapixel CCD and a 25-125 mm zoom lens with no stabilisation. Launch price will no doubt be the key to this camera's success, as you can pick up stabilised 2011 compacts like the Panasonic S1 and Olympus VR-310 for under £100.
The ST77 could be a more interesting option, though, thanks to its more stylish design and integrated stabilisation system. By far the most attractive option in the range is the ST88, which is loaded with a different lens (26-130 mm), a stabilisation system and a 460,000-dot screen ... even though the viewing angles will still be pretty poor.
These four pocket compacts may be reasonably stylish snappers but the technology is nothing special. We would have liked to see a BSI CMOS sensor and a high-quality screen in at least one of these entry-level models. Canon managed as much with the Ixus 115, for example.
