This is the first interchangeable lens compact that we've added to our compact camera reviews page rather than our SLR and hybrid camera reviews page. That's because the Nikon V1 is the first interchangeable lens compact we've tested that uses a small-format sensor, which has more in common with a compact camera sensor than an SLR sensor. The V1 promises a compact design, fast reactions and good picture quality.

The V1 has the biggest 'small-format' sensor in our compact camera reviews at 8.8 x 13.2 mm. It also has an electronic viewfinder, a high-definition screen and interchangeable lenses. The Nikon V1 is the first such camera we've seen that doesn't use a sensor derived from an SLR sensor, but picture quality should still be considerably better than the average compact camera. In fact, the V1 is a kind of expert compact but with the added advantage of interchangeable lenses. Nikon has certainly tried to do something different with the V1, so let's see how this new hybrid compact shapes up in practice.
