Fujifilm Presents Three F-Series Superzoom Compacts

Fuji today announced no less than 19 new cameras, updating its entire compact camera range. Among them are three models to replace the F600 EXR—the F660, its direct successor, and the F750 and F770, two higher-end models equipped with 20x zoom lenses.

After the F550 EXR then the nearly identical F600 EXR, Fujifilm has now presented the F660 EXR (the name F650 had already been used for a mid-range compact in 2006).

The F660 looks very similar to the F600, with which it shares the same body, lens and sensor (even if Fuji claims to have improved its already very good 16-Megapixel BSI CMOS and the relatively classic 3-inch 460,000-dot screen).

Since a focal range of 24 to 360 mm is now pretty standard stuff, Fujifilm will be using this camera as a kind of 'high-end entry-level' model, which is a pretty good idea since the F550 and F600 were good compacts, even if we've seen better lenses in Sony and Canon superzooms.

While the GPS has been removed from this particular model (after all, in the F series, only the highest-end model usually has this function), The F660 can still take RAW-format photos, which is good news for anyone who's into photo editing.

Due to launch with a competitive price tag (exact UK price TBC), the F660 EXR should be an attractive option for users looking for a more affordable superzoom compact.

The two real new superzooms Fuji announced today are the F750 EXR and F770 EXR top-of-the-range compacts.

From the back, the cameras look the same as the F660 EXR, and all three models have the same screen. They have the same internal electronics too, based on the 16-Megapixel sensor with EXR functions for boosting sensitivity and dynamic range.

In other respects, though, the F750 EXR and F770 EXR are quite different from the F660 EXR. For starters, their shutter-release buttons are in a different location, no doubt making them more comfortable to use. On top of that, both models have a new Function button, a redesigned handle that should improve grip and a 20x zoom lens (equivalent to 25-500 mm). The wide angle therefore isn't quite as wide, but sensitivity is increased at telephoto settings. We just hope that the lens will be more consistent in quality than the F600 lens, particularly at short focal lengths.

On paper, these cameras look like decent rivals for Canon and Sony superzooms (and Panasonic if the replacement for the TZ20 gets a decent sensor). With Full HD video, advanced functions, a RAW mode and more, we're looking forward to testing them already!

Oh, we almost forgot ... you're probably wondering what the difference is between the two models. The pricier F770 EXR will have a built-in GPS both for geo-tagging photos and for finding saved locations on a map or with the direction and distance. The F750 EXR doesn't have the GPS and will be a little cheaper.
