Fujifilm Announces Super-Slim Z110 and Z1000 EXR Compacts

Fuji today announced no less than 19 new cameras, updating its entire compact camera range. After presenting a mass of classic compacts, Fuji also showed off a couple of sleek, slimline models. The Z110 is a low-cost option with a standard CCD sensor and a button-based interface, while the higher-end Z1000 EXR uses Samsung's home-grown BSI CMOS and sports a multipoint touchscreen.

The Z1000 EXR is the latest in a long line of more 'high-tech' Fuji compacts. As its name suggests, it has the same sensor as Fuji's F-series models—a 16-Megapixel backlit CMOS 'EXR' sensor that we've seen in action before (and which has apparently been improved for 2012). The exact tech specs of the lens aren't yet known, other than the fact it's a 5x zoom, but it's likely to be the same 28-140 mm lens seen in previous models. Note that the optical zoom can also be used in the Full HD video mode (with stereo sound).

The 3.5-inch, 460,000-dot touchscreen has multipoint technology so you can control the camera like a touchscreen smartphone ... in theory, at least.

So far, this camera seems to be strikingly similar to the Z950 EXR, announced in the spring but already ditched from Fuji's product catalogues. Although the style has clearly evolved, with a new curvier, more feminine design, the main new feature on the outside of the camera is a front-facing mirror for help with self portraits.

On the inside, however, what's really new in this model is the built-in Wi-Fi chip. Thanks to this new-found connectivity, you can share images instantly with a smartphone or tablet, like in the recent Panasonic FX90 (although we hope this Fuji proves a bit easier to use).

Fujifilm FinePix Z110: Cheaper Option

Alongside this technology-packed camera, the Fuji Z110 looks like the poor relation. While it still has a 5x zoom, it has no Wi-Fi, no touchscreen and no EXR sensor. There's no optical stabilisation either, just a digital stabiliser that's not likely to be a whole lot of use.

Otherwise, the Z110 is a slim and stylish basic compact with a rather uninteresting 14-Megapixel CCD, a 2.5-inch screen, and which will be counting on its cheerful colours to catch customers' eyes.
