Conclusion
With the PowerShot D20, Canon is back in line with the competition when it comes to waterproof compacts. The zoom lens isn't the best we've seen, but the camera is pleasant to use and has all the functions you'd expect from an underwater snapper these days (Full HD video, stabilisation, GPS, etc.)
The Olympus TG-820 brings a very welcome update to the electronics in last year's TG-810. The new components do a much better job in low light and, above all, make the camera a whole lot more responsive. All Olympus needs to do now is update that ageing lens ...
The Panasonic Lumix FT4 is a straight copy of the FT3. Its only new feature is a boosted GPS which is a minor, if pleasant, addition. This year's FT camera is still likely to retain its position as top dog in the waterproof compact market in 2012, but it doesn't change the game in any significant way. Plus, it still has a fair share of downsides (the screen, in particular).
The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is a compact water- and weather-proof snapper aimed at divers, hikers and outdoor types in general. However, the lens and sensitivity are slightly disappointing, which ultimately makes us prefer rivals like the Panasonic FT3.
