Conclusion
The Panasonic Lumix TZ30 is a decent superzoom compact with an excellent autofocus, a highly effective optical stabilisation system, a fast continuous shooting mode and a great video mode. However, it doesn't handle digital noise as well as some rivals and its battery life could be better.
The Olympus SZ-31 MR corrects the main flaw of last year's SZ-30 MR, as it's now much easier to see what's going on onscreen from various angles. A few nice new features have been added too, including a touchscreen interface and improved MR modes. So while Canon and Sony high-end superzooms handle noise more effectively, the SZ-31 MR is a surprisingly good value camera that's still a generally excellent choice.
The Fuji FinePix F770 EXR is a similar camera to its predecessors. The EXR modes are still as effective as ever, but the interface is at times a bit more confusing than in competitor models. Plus, while the lens gives very consistent quality, it's not quite on par with the best models on the market.
While the Olympus SZ-30 MR was a pleasant camera with good performances, our tests merely confirmed our suspicions about this mid-range version with its scaled-down specs: it's not as good. You're therefore better off looking for a cut-price SZ-30 before it disappears off shelves, as you'll get a better-quality camera with interesting MR modes for a similar price.
In the end, the same conclusions can be drawn about the VS20 as last year's RZ18—the camera is easy to use, has a powerful zoom lens and sells at a competitive price. Unfortunately, picture quality is only really up to scratch in very good lighting conditions ... In a similar price range, we prefer the Olympus SZ-20, which doesn't zoom quite as far but which generally takes better-quality pictures.
The Nikon Coolpix S9200 is a versatile compact that's pleasant and easy to use. However, picture quality isn't always on par with certain similarly priced competitors, such as the Canon SX240 and Panasonic TZ25.
The Canon PowerShot SX260 HS is a very nice update of the SX230. The 4:3-format screen has returned, the zoom lens and electronics are great quality, and the flash now only pops out when you actually want to use it! However, battery life is too tight (especially if you have the GPS switched on) for this camera to get a fifth star.
The Sony HX20V is a very nice camera indeed. It has plenty of features, offers good performances, and takes great pictures ... so long as you don't mind their slightly 'processed' look. The lens, however, could deliver more consistent levels of sharpness across the frame, as it's no better (and in some situations actually a bit worse) than the lenses in the HX10V and some other competitors.
