Dell U2711 Monitor: 27'' and 2560 x 1440

The two biggest producers of the panels found in computer monitors, Samsung and LG, have both recently told us the same thing: there's not much of a future for 30'' displays.  We had thought that we were going to remain stuck at Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) for a while.  Fortunately, though, a new generation of 27'' monitors has joined the latest iMacs with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels--and they use IPS technology, too.  A little more space, more room for info, wider viewing angles … what's not to like?

This new monitor is a big brother of the U2410 which we tested recently and liked a lot.  The U2711 will have a similar panel, and it's still IPS, so we're hoping for accurate colours, a good response time and wide viewing angles, although we're so sure of this last point that we're not too worried.  One disappointment is that the U2711 won't have the same pivot mode as the U2410, meaning you won't be able to use it in portrait mode.

In general, though, the hardware is pretty solid, with a VGA input, 2 x DVI, HDMI, composite video, a four-port USB hub and a card reader compatible with most memory card formats, even the fast-disappearing xD.

Looking at the numbers, Dell claims a contrast ratio of 1000:1 (isn't that nice, a realistic figure?) and a response time of 6 ms that's not worth comparing to other products as this is a measurement that means nothing in practice.  There's a CCFL backlight and the aspect ratio is 16:9.
