In light of the screen homogeneity issues noted by some users of the Dell U2410, we contacted customer services and then Dell directly, but we were greatly disappointed by their response!
Some users have unfortunately noticed major differences in brightness at different places on the screen. Some actually see a sort of Italian flag (green on the left, grey in the centre and red on the right) when the screen is supposed to be displaying a uniform grey.
These problems don't affect all U2410s. The model we tested, for example, didn't have any such issues and nor did the one ordered by one of our journalists for personal use. Nevertheless, the fault seems to be common enough to allow users to request an exchange due to a design fault, though only after extensive correspondence with customer services and you do, of course, run the risk of receiving another screen with the same fault.
We contacted Dell for more information but unfortunately the company couldn't/didn't want to reply. We therefore contacted customer services who, in spite of our efforts to obtain a more likely explanation, told us that the fault must come from the cables supplied with the screen. However, this doesn't make any sense with digital signals (DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort).
With this response from customer services in hand, we tried contacting Dell directly a second time to see if we could get a more rational answer, but unfortunately were met with silence again. That's a real shame—especially since, as a result, we've downgraded the monitor's score to two stars overall. As things stand, buying this monitor is something of a lottery as you can end up with either an excellent or very bad display.
