There was good news for games creators in Alistair Darling's budget speech yesterday. Addressing parliament, the Chancellor committed to helping "the computer games sector" and  keeping "British talent in this country".

Though Mr Darling did not detail the exact extent of the Games Tax Relief, it is believed it will represent around £40 million next year. Welcomed by TIGA, the trade association that represents the UK games industry, the tax breaks should protect or create up to 3,550 jobs in the sector and protect investment in development to the tune of £475 million, according to TIGA CEO, Dr Richard Wilson.

A Develop 100 report last year showed that over a quarter of the world's top 100 successful studios were based in the UK and the tax breaks were roundly praised by many of the studios, including Ubisoft, Realtime Worlds, Denki, Monumental and Rockstar. Rockstar is well known as the creator of the Grand Theft Auto series.
