Not content with its pole position in our current CPU rankings with the Core i7 3960X, Intel is apparently gearing up to release an even faster processor by the end of the year.

Intel is said to be working on a Core i7 3970X six-core processor based on the firm's Sandy Bridge-E (LGA2011 socket) architecture and with slightly higher clock speeds than than Core i7 3960X.

This six-core CPU is said to have a base clock speed of 3.5 GHz, which can be pushed up to 4 GHz in Turbo mode. That's 200 and 100 MHz higher than Intel's current high-end CPUs. This also sees the TDP (Thermal Design Power) upped from 130 to 150 watts. Intel's Hyper-Threading will be on hand, as will tri-channel RAM control.

The Core i7 3970X is expected to arrive at the end of 2012 with prices pushing £1,000. The Core i7 3960X should see its price cut as a result, or it may even be discontinued.
