A smaller version of the A8-3850, the AMD A6-3650 APU is built along the same lines but with lower clocks. The four cores are clocked at 2.6 GHz here (compared to 2.9 GHz on the A8), while the integrated graphics consists of a Radeon HD 6530D. This solution is down from 600 MHz on the A8-3850 to 443 MHz. Once again, there's no Turbo feature, nor anything similar to Intel's Hyper-Threading technology.

In practice, the processor part (index 60) is around 7.7% down on the A8-3850's processor performance. Although it does a little better than the Pentium G620 (index 56), it's still a long way behind the Core i3 2100 though priced at more or less the same level. The graphics is around 10% down on the A8, which limits even further the possibility of gaming with recent titles.

3/5 AMD A6-3650 DigitalVersus 2011-08-24 00:00:00

Pros

  • Impressive absolute performance of integrated graphics

Cons

  • Higher power consumption than Intel solutions
  • A faster CPU is required

Conclusion

A great step forward has been made on the APU side with a much improved graphics part. Unfortunately, there still isn't enough graphics muscle to allow you to dispense with a graphics card for gaming. Pure processor performance is also a good deal down on what's on offer from the competition.
