Switch Speed on the Fly!

A third button just under the scroll wheel allows you to change the speed of the mouse cursor instantly and without having to fiddle around in Windows. This is a very unusual feature for a basic mouse like this, as it's usually only found in gaming mice. It is, however, a great idea!
Press once and the mouse slows down to 500 dpi. Press again and you reach the 'standard' speed of 1000 dpi. Press a third time and the mouse speeds up to 2000 dpi. This is very practical, as it means each user can quickly adjust the mouse to suit their personal requirements (some people prefer a fast-moving cursor) or in relation to the program used (it can sometimes be useful to slow down the cursor if you need to work with greater precision).
Despite selling for under £20, this Sweex wireless mouse comes with a tiny USB adapter and a built-in speed-control button (see sidebar). It looks like a real bargain, but is it too good to be true?
What we liked: attractive and easy to install
This mouse has a nice, attractive design, with a matte black finish and a grey line highlighting its smooth curves. The scroll wheel looks good too: it's made from rubber and a convincing metal-effect plastic, giving the product a decidedly high-end look.
Computer novices will appreciate how simple this mouse is to set up and use: just plug the tiny USB adapter supplied into your computer and the mouse starts working straight away. There's no need to install software or drivers and the USB adapter is so small it can easily be left plugged into a laptop all the time—you'll probably even forget it's there!
What we didn't like
Appearances can unfortunately be deceptive. We were obviously unlucky with our test model, as the casing was slightly deformed around the buttons so the right-hand button seemed to stick up rather strangely.Underneath the mouse too, the sliders look like they'll get worn out quickly.
Above all, the LED sensor is very poor quality. Even with a mouse mat (which is necessary if the surface of your desk is even a little bit shiny) the sensor can't keep up with movements faster than 1.3 metres per second. That's really very slow, and is one of the worst scores we've seen to date.
Pluses
-
Ready to use in one second
-
Nice design
-
Speed can be adjusted on the fly
-
2 batteries supplied
-
Nice scroll wheel
Minuses
-
No thumb buttons
-
Disappointing finish
-
Low-quality LED sensor
This would make a good back-up mouse to have around as a spare. It looks good, it's easy to set up and we liked the fact you can adjust its speed at the touch of a button. However, its low-end finish and poor-quality sensor leave a lot to be desired.
