The Belmont family has been battling against Dracula and his evil buddies for almost 25 years now, and in 30 different games. But almost half a century later the Count has once again been resurrected, as Konami has announced a new instalment of Castlevania due for UK release on 8 October. Make way for the Lords of Shadow!

The very first version of Castlevania was released for the NES back in 1986. Since then, around thirty other versions have followed for platforms ranging from arcade machines to the Playstation 2, not forgetting Sega consoles and pretty much every Nintendo gaming system ever made.

The story is inspired by Bram Stocker's Dracula, focusing in particular on the on-going battle between Van Hellsing and Dracula. In the Castlevania series, Dracula is resurrected every hundred years. The Belmont family have to battle it out against the Count in his creepy castle using weapons including the iconic Vampire Killer whip and more conventional arms such as a dagger, holy water and an axe. Obviously, killing Dracula isn't as simple as it sounds, as you'll also have to deal with various ghosts and ghouls lurking around in the castle, as you make you way through its endless rooms, picking up useful objects and special powers along the way.

Lords of Shadow is set to take Castlevania back to a 'hack and slash' format (like God of War, Diablo etc.). This instalment is set in 1047 and sees gamers step into the shoes of Gabriel Belmon, a member of the 'Brotherhood of Light' who'll have to work his way through 50 levels using combinations of moves purchased using points earned during the game.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will hit shops in the UK on 8 October.
