Does your Canon PowerShot G10 give a violet tinge to areas that should be completely black? Don't worry, this is normal. A new piece of micro-software has been created to correct the fault, that only appears in certain circumstances and went pretty much unnoticed up till now.A little software bug can happen to anyone. Especially in very particular conditions, it is possible that they go unnoticed during the manufacturer's own testing.
The Canon G10 has a problem with “magenta shadows”: blacks take on a violet tinge in Raw files at 1600 ISO in continuous shooting. Rare as it may be, the problem can't be corrected satisfactorily after image processing; the new firmware 1.0.2.0 that should eliminate the problem, is therefore worth getting hold of.
Canon says that the products concerned are those whose serial number ends in a 0 or 1. Those models that have left the factory with the new firmware installed have a mark on the hinge of the battery cover.
When you download the new firmware, you’ll be asked for the serial number on your G10, so make sure you have it to hand before starting the download.
