In the world of compact superzooms, there are plenty of alternatives to star models such as the Panasonic TZ10 and Sony HX5V, some of which really aren't bad at all. With the two compacts we're testing today, for example, you can save cash on a big-brand's lower spec model with the Panasonic TZ8, or pick up a high-end model from a lesser-known brand with Casio's FH100.

The Panasonic Lumix TZ8 is basically a scaled-down version of the TZ10. It has a smaller screen, no integrated GPS, and no stereo sound or AVCHD videos. It does, however, still have the excellent 25-300 mm zoom lens and 12 effective Megapixels.

With its 10x zoom and backlit 10-Megapixel sensor, the Casio FH100 looks like a direct rival for the Ricoh CX3. Casio is a brand that's often overlooked these days, but its first 10x zoom compact is pleasantly surprising.
