BlackBerry Blackout: Significant Improvement According To RIM

This isn't an easy time for RIM. While its market share is down, the BlackBerry manufacturer has just had to deal with a serious issue with its reputedly infallible system.

The network problems affected BlackBerry services over several days with two consecutive blackouts. As a result, users (in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and then North America) could no longer access their emails, the Internet or the BBM messaging service.

Although things returned to normal on Tuesday morning, the system came down again later in the day. The problem resulted from a broken switch in its core infrastructure and the back-up switch failed to kick in. "As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we're now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible," RIM said.

According to the company, they are on the way to resolving the issue with services gradually returning to normal. The last few days have brought the fragility of RIM's system, used mainly in the pro-world, and its ever decreasing market share into sharp relief.

Are the BlackBerry servers sturdy enough to support the increase in traffic or is the problem with the system architecture? RIM needs to let us know, and quickly, if it doesn't want to see its customers moving over to the competition.
