Bigger, faster, hungrier: make way for the new WD VelociRaptor!

Hold on to your hats, as Western Digital’s new and improved VelociRaptor is now the fastest hard drive on the market with an (as yet) unrivaled rotation speed of 10,000 rpm.
But it’s the VelociRaptor’s upgraded capacities that are really going to turn heads, with a monster 450 GB or 600 GB of storage space on offer. So as well as being, quite frankly, enormous, they are also seriously speedy, with WD claiming the new VelociRaptor drives to be 15% faster than the previous models. With performances like this, you should be able to run a powerful computer off just one hard drive, instead of having a small, fast system drive and a separate drive for storage.
WD’s VelociRaptor hard drives use a 6 Gb/s SATA interface and have a cache memory of 32 MB, compared with 16 MB for the 150 GB and 300 GB models. They’re also 2.5-inch hard drives built into a 3.5-inch cooling system known as the IcePack mounting frame.
The WD4500HLHX (450 GB) and WD6000HLHX (600 GB) are already shipping in the US and should be available here soon. UK pricing is yet to be confirmed but US RRPs are $299 for the 450 GB version and $329 for the 600 GB version.
